This is Alf from Roman Road. He wants me to take his photograph again and again. I give him a bag of cherries and we sit, surrounded by glass and concrete in Bishops Square, Spitalfields.

A Roman cemetery with a lady buried in jet jewels, the church of St Mary Spital, and her Charnel House are the subterranean ghosts of these hospital fields, site of one of the largest hospitals in medieval England.
