lexical accumulation

Some new words. Rhyparography – the painting of lowly subjects. Ekphrasis – writing about visual objects and art.

On one hand, I like them for their mono-lexical accuracy: rhyparography, ekphrasis. But on the other, they are as esoteric as Highway Maintenance Supervising (road-sweeping) or Community Retailing Management (shopkeeping).

Many professional titles are by now obscure due to their archaism – wainwright, drover, muleteer – and are preserved in surnames, like wistful heirlooms. Farrier, Smith, Mason, Wheeler.

But I doubt there are many Mr Rhyparographers and Mr Ekphrasers around.
